daisy_smallOne of the greatest resources we can offer you is the opportunity to meet with a Discipleship Coach. These are trained Grace Community members who can sit down and help you discern your “spiritual address” and what you might need next on your journey forward as a follower of Jesus Christ. Meeting with a Discipleship Coach is easy and hospitable.  Meetings are usually 30 minutes long and you can connect in person or on the phone. You can meet just once or for a season as you see fit and as you find it helpful. Your coach may direct you to one or more of the resources on this website. There is no cost to you for the coaching – it is part of what we feel is necessary to empower you to grow as a disciple.

A life of generosity certainly includes presenting our tithes and offerings as an act of worship, but it also includes creating a lifestyle with margins that allows us to respond to the needs of others God puts in our path on a daily basis. This reflects Extravagant Generosity.

Enough

Money has great power in our lives. Used wisely, it is one key to accomplishing our goals, providing for our needs, and fulfilling our life purpose. In recent years, many of us ignored the wisdom of the past when it came to managing and spending our money. We felt an insatiable desire for more. And we found ourselves spending tomorrow’s money today in order to have what we hoped would satisfy. The result of all of this was not greater happiness and satisfaction, but greater stress and anxiety.

Begin to give of your resources to God’s work

This can be an important step for you – especially if you have not developed the habit of giving to help others and spreading the love of God.  Giving to the church during the offering gives you the chance to begin this. You can also give on-line or mail in your gift. Although this does help fund the work of God
through Grace Community to nurture disciples and help others, this is not the only benefit. By giving, you begin to cultivate a lifestyle of generosity – something Jesus encouraged with his disciples.

Suggestion for starters:  Although a tithe (10% of income) is mentioned in the Old Testament and many churches use this as a standard, many folks find it difficult to start there – especially if you are paying off debts. So, as a small step in the right direction, start by choosing an amount you can live with right now. Then begin to give weekly or monthly by putting the amount in a sealed envelope and dropping in the offering plate during the service. Healthy habits are developed in small steps – so by doing this, you are beginning to develop a rhythm of generosity. When you begin to see the benefits of this habit you can consider increasing your gift as God directs.

Begin to give regularly and move toward a tithe

If you have begun to give to God’s work through the church and want to follow through on a next step, you can begin to use the tithe (10% of your income) as a target to shoot for and make sure to “pledge” your donation to the church during the Stewardship Campaign.

Suggestion for your growth:  Calculate what you are giving now in terms of a percentage of your income. You can choose whether this is gross or net income. Then, each year when asked to pledge, consider increasing you giving by 1% or more.
There is nothing magical or legalistic about the 10% - it is not a rule but a guideline. The real goal is to grow toward generosity, learning to leave behind the cultural norm of overwhelming credit card debt and overspending on luxuries – and making more of your resources available to real needs in your community – through the church and elsewhere. If you are struggling with credit card, school loan, medical or other large debt, consider the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University class which is offered periodically at Grace – see below.

Digging Deeper: A Path to Spiritual Maturity

This is a two-year advanced discipleship experience that combines Scriptural learning, experiential prayer, service to others, and a Wesleyan covenant small group connection. In the first year, the sojourners will cover five modules:  Module 1: Finding and Fulfilling the Purpose of Your Life, Module 2: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows, Module 3: Putting on the Character of Christ, Module 4: What is the Church? - Living as a Christ-Centered Community, Module 5: Stewardship of Everything & Why Justice Matters, and Module 6: The Good News: Evangelism and Mission. The modules are separated by breaks during the year and the class suspends during two month in the summer. The first year experience of Digging Deeper begins and ends with a retreat.  Digging Deeper is intended to help you discern your calling and mission in life and define a beginning “life mission statement”.  In the second year, those trained in the first year will lead another group of sojourners through a similar process. Several times during the second year, these new leaders will also experience some “day retreats” with senior leadership that will help them further define their mission and vision. This experience is offered periodically.
